St. Gertrude of Nivelles (626 - 659) was a medieval abbess of the Abbey of Nivelles, Belgium. She was a mystic who memorized much of Holy Scripture and founded churches, monasteries and hospices for travelers. She is invoked for protection against rats and mice, and is considered the patron saint of cats. Her feast day is March 17th.
