Description
High pressure in winter on Lough Mask in Co. Mayo means the possibility of early morning cloud inversion and mist over the lake, obscuring the view of the islands and mountains in the distance. The serenity of this scene in 2007, successfully captured, inspired me to continue my photographic journey.
Fed from mountains streams, the lake has one man made canal and many limestone subterranean rivers slowly draining the lake to Lough Corrib 130 feet below and a few miles south. The rainfall in winter however overwhelms the drainage capacity, resulting in the annual rise of 6 feet or more in water levels of the lough.
