Artist's Description

The interior of the Alabama state capitol in Montgomery is elegant - ornate and simple at the same time as this view of a cantilevered staircase that leads from the second to the third floor will show you. From this perspective, its lines remind me of the numeral 2. Here the gently curving banister and spiral stairs frame a window and a chandelier. The architectural style of the building is Greek Revival and it was designed by Horace King, a former slave and well-known architect of the mid 19th century. The tones here are much more golden than they are in reality.
