Description
A curious Spotted Towhee checking out the photographer.
The spotted towhee (Pipilo maculatus) is a large colorful sparrow native to the western North America where this live in thickets at the edges and within the forests. They are gleaming black on their head and neck, white chest, rufous flanks and black and white spotted wings. Their eyes are bright red. These mottled colors make them difficult to see in the woods. They hop over the ground beneath dense tangles of scrubs, scratching in leaf litter for food. We see them often scratching for seeds dropped under the bird feeders.
Early in the breeding season, the male towhee spends the mornings singing loudly to attract the females.
